Transylvanian Events Calendar

Petrecere_006

Our friends Iuliana and Cristi from Reky Travel (www.reky-travel.de), a great travel agency from Sibiu, have compiled a quite extensive list of events taking place in Transylvania this summer. Here we would like to present you with some of the events we think are particularly noteworthy and we have included some links to the respective sites.

All summer long… Concerts organized by in Saxon churches in several locations in Transylvania. The concerts are often of extremely high musical quality and often in amazing settings – from very rural in charming old churches to amazing city churches of outstanding acoustics and slightly dilapidated oppulence… Sadly the site is only available in German and Romanian: http://siebenbuergischekirchenmusik.wordpress.com

For the first 10 days at the beginning of summer, Sibiu becomes an enormous stage that opens a window to humanity in its most vibrant form. The 20th edition of the Sibiu International Theater Festival will take place June 7th to 16th, 2013 and is always a most impressive affair. Established theater groups performing alongside off-theater groups in many different locations just make this a most interesting event: www.sibfest.ro

In the small village os Hosman, about 1,30h away from Cund, Gabi and Jochen Cotaru have created a great setting for cultural events in the old mill they restored to (an beyond) its former beauty: http://www.moara-veche.ro/sura_culturala.php

We just love it – Oana and Tudor Giurgiu have created an amazing film fest in Transylvania and we are so proud to be able to host them now and then in Cund! Every year in the beginning if the summer (this year from May 31st to June 9th 2013). During the last eleven years, Transilvania IFF has become a well-known brand in Romania, not only due to the outstanding films screened every year, but also for the effective organization, sparkling atmosphere and density of events, from seminars, workshops and panels to fabulous concerts and crazy all night long parties. http://tiff.ro

A fantastic little festival for “unheard music” is celebrating nearly forgotten composers on an astonishing high level of musical quality – the “pontus musicae”  organizers see it as a humanistic an ethical mission to promote the lesser heard great and sometimes less accessible music of the last centuries – highly recommended: http://www.pontus-musicae.org/de/concerts.phphttp://www.pontus-musicae.org/de/index.php

In the amazing open air ASTRA museum in Sibiu this contest-festival gives the opportunity to folk soloists to produce themselves and gain their place on the folk music stage. The contest is open to young people, from Romania and Diaspora, authentic representatives of the ethno-folkloric areas they originate in. “Summer, Summer, Spring” Festival contributes to the preservation of the Romanian folk heritage and takes place yearly, in March. The festival gala is meant to be a folk delight attended by the winners of festival previous editions, as well as well-known Romanian folk ensembles and soloists: http://www.traditiisibiene.ro/homepage.html

Lucy Abel Smith is organizing the wonderful Transylvanian Book Festival from September 5th to September 9th, 2013 in the area around Biertan, very close to Cund. This Festival aims both to introduce authors to a new readership and to present the beauty of the region which informed their writing. Unlike other book festivals here is the opportunity for all to steep themselves in the country that has given so much to the imagination in one of the last great landscapes of Europe: http://www.transylvanianbookfestival.co.uk

More events will be added soon!
